Chapter Ten

Aeron pressed closer against Rowan as they neared the town. Her village lay little more than three days ride at their current pace. The possibility someone here in Carroghofa might be from Brithdir remained a real danger.

Rowan’s hand stroked her hair. The gesture soothed her, and as it did whenever he treated her with any sign of tenderness, her body warmed. This time, she recognized a layer to the heat that, while based in her physical attraction, reminded her of the strange sensation of security she had from time to time since he had taken her into his possession. The surety Rowan would do whatever he must to keep her safe wrapped around her heart. No matter if his reasons left her shamed and ruined. If it kept her alive, she’d go along with anything he wanted.

God’s bones, who did she try to fool? She’d do anything he asked, and not just to save her life. He had changed her somehow, to not be horrified by what he asked of her, did to her.

She glanced over at Gerard. He too wore a stony expression, and she knew the two knights assessed their surroundings. As strangers, they would draw much attention entering a town of this size. Especially one woman with two men. Questions would be asked. How would they answer?

“Rowan?” She kept her voice low.

He looked down at her. “What is it?”

“If someone… should acknowledge me…” She found she couldn’t bring herself to voice the words.

“Aeron, I have claimed you as mine. That includes my protection. No one shall lay a finger upon you. Unless I choose to allow it.”

The relief sweeping over her nearly suffocated her until his last words sank through. She stiffened. The unspoken threat he might let someone else touch her in any way hung heavy enough. Why did he insist on being so cruel, threatening one of the worst acts he could? And yet, somehow, sometimes, she sensed he said such things precisely to anger her. She pressed her lips together to silence her heated retort, knowing he wouldn’t hesitate to act on his warning once they entered Carroghofa, if only to prove he would keep his word.

She tried to recall the last time she’d been here, in this town that had grown much larger since her last visit many years ago. How old had she been? Ten winters? ‘Twas near ten years ago. She recalled an inn as well as an alehouse near the town square and said so.

Rowan nodded. “I suspect the tavern will be a good place to learn something that may be of benefit, to either of us.”

The neared the first outer buildings, small, private residences. Aeron caught sight of people in the streets, several of whom stopped to watch the strangers ride by. A shiver passed over her. What if one of them knew her?

“Easy, girl. You’re safe with me, remember that.”

He stroked her hair again. She glanced down at her wrists, covered with the bandages. Would they raise suspicion? She pulled her cloak down to cover the cloth strips.
